Asian Studies offers a diverse and rigorous teaching and research program that ranges from South to South-East and East Asia, and covers both classical and modern Asian studies. It provides strong undergraduate language training in Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, and Sanskrit. Staff have significant research expertise in a wide range of fields relating to Asia. The program places particular emphasis on postgraduate research conducted using primary sources in the original language. The program promotes in-country language study and assists students in securing support to pursue library research in specialised libraries and to undertake first-hand research in targeted countries. The Borchardt Library is particularly strong in the areas of classical and modern South Asian studies.
