Duration: 1 year full-time, 2-3 years (part-time)

This course is designed for people who wish to develop communicative competence in Australian sign language (AUSLAN). It allows students to explore the use of AUSLAN in a variety of communicative settings and develop a thorough understanding of the basic grammatical structures of AUSLAN.

Two further subjects are offered to comply with the Department of Education regulations for qualified AUSLAN teachers. They are: DFS41LCA, Language and Cultural Studies A and DFS42LCB, Language and Cultural Studies B.

Admission requirements

Applicants should normally have a three-year bachelor degree (or equivalent). Applicants who can demonstrate native-speaker fluency in AUSLAN or practical experience within the deaf community will be considered for special entry.

Course structure

The course requires three years of part-time study or one year full-time. Students must take subjects totalling 120 credit points, as shown below.

Students who have completed a core subject as part of another course must choose another subject approved by the course coordinator. Students who obtain advanced standing for any of the above subjects must complete one or two of the following subjects in order to achieve the required 120 credit points:
