Faculty of EducationCoursework programsGraduate Diploma in Technology Education – Melbourne (Bundoora) (EDGTE), Bendigo (RGTE), Albury-Wodonga (EDGTEW), Mildura (EDGTEM)The course is offered through a cooperative arrangement between TAFE and RTO institutions and La Trobe University. It is primarily designed to train teachers for secondary schools in the Technology learning areas. For years 7–10 Design, Creativity and Technology is integrated into VELS with subjects in Wood, Metal, Plastics, Food, Textiles, Mechanical and Electronic systems. At VCE level, the Technology curriculum becomes more specialised and includes: (i) Systems Engineering, (ii) Design and Technology, (iii) Food Technology, (iv) Information Technology, and (v) Agriculture and Horticulture subjects. Graduates will teach in one or more of these areas in a VCE Vocational Education and Training subject area and also in VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) depending on their prior qualifications and industry experience. DurationThe course is two years full-time or three years part-time. Admission requirementsTo be eligible for entry to the course, applicants must satisfy one or more of the following requirements:
Literacy assessment testCandidates who have not completed Year 12 English or equivalent will be required to undertake a Numeracy and Literacy Test. The test will be conducted in early December at the relevant campus prior to the close of applications. Special requirementsThe Victorian Department of Education and Training requires a satisfactory criminal record check for all teacher education students undertaking practicum requirements in Victorian Department of Education and Training schools. It is expected that equivalent requirements will exist for all other Victorian schools. Students upon first enrolling in this course will be required to complete a ‘Working With Children Check’ form available at Australia Post offices. Students must provide a certified copy of their valid Working With Children card prior to undertaking teaching placements. Confirmation of a criminal record may jeopardise a student’s ability to gain access to a suitable, or any, practicum placement(s) and may therefore delay or prevent completion of the course. Course structureThe course consists of 240 credit points of study normally taken in the following sequence. First year, La Trobe University units:
Second year, La Trobe University units:
First or second year, TAFE units:
Key: Note: If a unit is under-enrolled (fewer than 10), students may be required to attend university units at another campus.
A full description of units, including the unit name, unit code, credit points, campus/location, unit coordinator, class requirements, assessment, prerequisites and readings, appears at the end of this chapter.
