La Trobe Student Theatre and Film

Student Theatre and Film runs a number of major projects throughout the year and is open to all students from La Trobe University.  The office is managed by a professional theatre director whose role it is to direct student productions, facilitate all of the various activities and otherwise provide support to students who are keen to make their own work.

Our programme includes Short Works – a season of student written plays,  Short Flicks – student made films, The Moat Festival – an annual celebration of the performing arts on campus, as well as  a season of off-campus plays and a cabaret.

The office also provides support to students who may wish to mount their own theatre or film projects with free use of rehearsal space, performance venues, lighting and film making equipment, as well as general advice and support about performing arts on this campus.

Universities can be an intimidating place for new students, confronted by lectures, essays and exams.  Getting involved with Student Theatre and Film is one of the best ways to ensure your time is fulfilling and enjoyable.  By taking part in these activities you’ll gain skills, knowledge, self empowerment and perhaps most importantly a whole bunch of friends who share your passion for theatre and film.

All it takes to get involved is for you to fill in a sign up form. You’ll then receive one of our mailouts, with details of upcoming productions and auditions. If you find something you’re interested in, call the office on 9479 1198, and we’ll sign you up for an audition or, if you prefer the non-acting side of things, take your details and assign you a crew role.

We try our best to assign roles to anyone who wants them, but don't despair if you miss out the first time (it just means too many people tried out), because the next production will be coming along soon after.Trades Hall Gif

Also, don't forget that outside of festival times one of the functions of this office is to provide support for student-driven events. We offer assistance, but it’s up to you to come into the office with suggestions or submissions for new productions. We'll provide your show with a budget and a venue, and then leave it mainly up to you to do it how you think it should be done (but we'll always be there for advice and support).
