Host Orientation Scheme

What’s it all about

Host Picture The La Trobe Host Scheme is a program designed to help new students acclimatise to the La Trobe Uni campus and way of life. We do this by introducing new students to over 150 current La Trobe students during the Enrolment and Orientation periods.

At enrolments over 5000 students visit the Bundoora Campus, many for the first time, as they attempt to fill out the many forms required to secure their university place. It is the role of the Hosts to guide the first year through this process from beginning to end. Training is provided to cover the enrolment process and hosts are required to assist with the timetable, directions, and distribution of the La Trobe diary and show bag as well as promoting O-week.

O-week, which runs for 3 days, occurs in the last week of the summer holidays. It is during this time that new students have the opportunity to experience the campus at its best, with both academic and social activities throughout the day and night. Those people who have signed up to be part of Hosts will lead a tour of first years from a similar course to themselves around the University and will also be invited to participate in all the activities that take place.

Roles of a Host

Hosts are responsible to the Host Co-ordinator for providing support and information to new students during both the Enrolment periods and Orientation week. Recruitment takes place throughout the second semester and hosts are selected from all courses offered at La Trobe. A basic position description is as follows:

  • Provide peer support to enrolling students
  • Answer questions relating to the University and University Life
  • Assist new students with timetables and enrolment issues
  • Act as a guide to people unfamiliar with the campus
  • Promote and participate in Orientation events
  • Assist with organisation and running of events during O-week and Enrolments
(Signing up new students for Host tours, leading a Host tour, helping with events and other duties.)

Group of Volunteers

Expectations
The Union and University will provide you with training and support before each major activity on campus. We will also provide you with a host tee shirt and cap; sunscreen, lunch, $20 a day to cover travel and a safe area where you can get out of the sun and the crowds and chill-out if you need to. At the end of O-week a written reference can be obtained along with a certificate of service  and other opportunities such as continuing volunteer/casual work may become available. If you are interested, please ask your Co-ordinator about these opportunities.

The Rules

There are some rules that you do need to abide by while being Host, these are common sense regulations that protect both you and the program.

  • Hosts will always wear their Host tee shirt and hat while working, no modification to Host apparel is allowed until after O-week!
  • Host will be required to sign in at the Union Services Centre each day they attend.
  • Hosts will not give course advice but defer such questions to appropriate staff.
  • Hosts will not use sexist, racist or defamatory language Please do not belittle or criticise courses, staff or organisations on campus.
  • Enrolment procedures change every year, please use handbooks, guides or staff to check your facts before answering a question about which you are unsure.
  • Do not engage in any Illegal action or action which would bring the University, the program or you into disrepute!

Failure to adhere to these rules are grounds for immediate dismissal from the Host Program. Feel free to discuss these rules with your Host Coordinator if you require clarification.

Training

As a host you will be required to come to the training days we provide. At these events, speakers from the Faculties, Student Centre, Student Services and The Union will provide you with all the information you need to assist students during the enrolment process. Past hosts are also required to attend as enrolment procedure change every year. A separate training focused on host tours and O-week is also run, hosts will be taken on a tour by an experienced senior host and shown the many nuances of a good tour. Lunch is provided as is the opportunity to get to know who you’re working with.
