GSM students take on the world

ContestantsThree groups from the GSM compete in the World Global Management Challenge.

The La Trobe Graduate School of Management (GSM) is sponsoring three groups of students in this year’s edition of the World Global Management Challenge. These students are currently busy competing with more than 400,000 other competitors from 30 countries in the world’s largest management simulation game. Each of the teams run virtual companies and their objective is to get the highest share price in the simulators virtual stock exchange.

The groups consist of a mix of MBA and Master of International Business students from a various backgrounds. One team even combines current students with GSM alumni, providing a great networking opportunity between past and current students.

Combining theory and practice

According to Dr Suzanne Young, Associate Professor at the GSM, the World Global Management Challenge provides students with a challenge that “holistically brings all of their learnings from the course together in an applied manner”. Dr Young is one of three senior academics that mentor the groups in the competition.

In her many travels to other business schools, Dr Young saw the benefits of entering motivated students into case competitions; “It allows students to apply all the knowledge gained in their studies in a near-realistic setting. This also builds their teamwork and leadership skills”, continues Dr Young.

Global strategies

The students are equally enthusiastic about the challenge and see it as an opportunity to test their skills against global competition. Ms Pauline Fernandez from Mexico is currently undertaking her MBA at the GSM. To her, the challenge is an opportunity to get the most out of her time as a student. “The challenge allows us to gather all the skills acquired in the MBA and to combine them with our previous professional experience to further develop a business strategy”, she says.

Is the GSM expecting to win the challenge? “Of course!”, Dr Young and Ms Fernandez agree with confidence.
