Gender, Sexuality and Diversity Studies

Welcome to Gender, Sexuality & Diversity (GSD) Studies at the Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus of La Trobe University

GSD offers you the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of how identities in their diverse forms—including gender, sexuality, ethnicity, class, disability and nation—both shape and are shaped by political, social and cultural institutions, bodies of knowledge and relations of power. GSD maintains strong community connections and public commitments to matters of equity and social justice, enabling students to apply their education to practices for social transformation. In drawing on an extensive range of disciplines in one area study, GSD is unique. Students will develop a strong base in key concepts relevant to history, sociology, philosophy, media studies and Aboriginal studies, among others. This offers students greater scope and flexibility in constructing their degrees.

By specialising in GSD you will hone your skills in critical thinking, effective written and verbal communication, textual analysis, historical and sociological investigations, as well as legal and statistical interpretations. The interdisciplinary focus additionally provides students with a breadth of knowledge and range of skills applicable to all professional, public and personal life choices one makes after university study.

A GSD major includes an extensive range of units from across the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, ideal for those students who are interested in a broad range of courses and interdisciplinary work that engages with diversity issues and their relations to social justice. This extensive base also provides opportunities for research under the supervision of affiliated staff across the faculty.
