What is Greek?
Greek is an extremely rich language, having been in continuous use for four thousand years. The rare continuity of its documented history and the complexity of its contemporary situation combine to make the Greek nation and its culture a particularly interesting and challenging site for studying humanity from a variety of perspectives, including contemporary cultural theory. The national language of Greece and Cyprus, Greek is also an official language of the European Union and one of the most widely spoken languages in Australia. Indeed, it is difficult to travel anywhere in the world without encountering Greek speakers – the Greek Government estimates that there are seven million Greeks living outside of Greece.
