Greek Studies Program

Undergraduate Studies

Ancient Mediterranean Culture

The program in Ancient Mediterranean Culture is currently available at undergraduate level only and is centred on a three-year sequence of language and textual study, commencing at beginners' level.
This is complemented by first-year Greek civilisation subjects of broad appeal, such as "From Homer to Hollywood: the perennial Greek hero and heroine", and "Ancient Mediterranean civilisation: the Greek achievement" which is a core requisite subject for the major in Ancient Mediterranean Studies. The Program plans to develop further opportunities for the study of ancient Greece and the Hellenic tradition throughout its 4,000-year evolution.

Modern Greek

The undergraduate program in modern Greek is centered on learning the language at a variety of levels with courses for everyone from beginners, who start by mastering the most basic communicative skills for everyday situations, through to advanced background-speakers, who take applied language subjects linked to professional purposes (such as translation of legal, administrative and medical documents). A major in Modern Greek is offered by the Program to students commencing at all first-year levels, Beginners, Intermediate, and Post-VCE, both at Bundoora for La Trobe students and at Parkville for University of Melbourne students.

Language subjects are complemented by others focussing on modern Greek history, literature and society in Greece, Cyprus and the Diaspora, some of which are taught in Greek, though others such as the Modern Greek history subjects taught within the European Studies program are offered in English. Detailed subject descriptions are available by searching the Subject Database.
