About the Department
The Department of Genetics has strong components of teaching and research across a diverse range of expertise, providing students with sound experience in the application of modern genetics. It is one of the few independent departments of genetics in Australia, resulting in a dedicated and integrated approach to teaching.
We offer subjects across many areas of study, including environmental science, wildlife and conservation biology, agricultural science, medicinal chemistry and biotechnology, as well as a genetics major.
The Honours and postgraduate research positions available within the Department are backed by an outstanding record of research achievement, and also highlight the wide variety of areas our expert staff are involved in. These include molecular, cell and population biology involving humans, microbes and native and exotic animals and plants. We also collaborate with a range of research institutions in Australia and globally.
Students have access to excellent research facilities throughout their studies as the Department is a founding member of the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Sciences (LIMS) - a $94M project that supports and expands our teaching and research capabilities.
The Department is situated within the School of Molecular Sciences.
