Ms Jemma Smalley-Roberts

Course of study:
Bachelor of Business (Tourism Management)

When I choose to go to uni at La Trobe, I thought about many things - Where would this course lead me? What would my career opportunities be? Is this the university that I would like to attend? Can this course stand alone or will it need to be complimented by some other course or training?

I started La Trobe from Year 12 doing a Bachelor of Animal Science, which did not suit me so then I deferred for one year and then started back again at La Trobe doing my current course

The staff that I have been in contact with throughout my past three years have been the most supportive and have pushed me to be the best I can be and get the most out of the course and it's content. The course itself has also been one of the best things for me because it has opened up my mind to the movement of people throughout the world and their motivations. It has also pushed me to travel which was never on the top of my agenda until now.

Another fantastic thing that La Trobe has given me was the opportunity to go on exchange in Semester 2 of 2009 to the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, which gave me a unique opportunity and so much support.

The best part about the student exchange program was making friends and networking with people from all over the world. It was also good to see how study is undertaken in other countries and it made me realize how lucky I was to be studying at La Trobe and in general an Australian university as the standards with regards to coursework were so much higher at La Trobe. I feel that La Trobe is providing me with a valuable education and also preparing me for the business world. My exchange also opened up the world to me and I certainly got bitten by the 'travel bug' to explore the world and the many different cultures.

My course has set me up to go straight into the workforce but I have decided to look into completing further education in environment or resource management to combine with the upcoming degree in Tourism Management so that I can look at jobs with such organizations as DSE, parks Victoria, and the Victorian Government or even the Federal Government in their tourism departments.

The facilities at La Trobe are fantastic, there is a support system for anything and everything anyone would ever need support for. Around the campus there are many places that are quiet and you can study in peace or you can sit in the Agora and enjoy a coffee with friends and join in many activities and feel very welcomed. The library has information on everything that I ever needed to know and at times has surprised me with what they did have within their collection for my assignments and there is also always staff nearby to help you in the library if you get stuck.

I always thought that I would end up at one of the other universities in Melbourne because I didn't know much about La Trobe but I am glad I took the advice from my career co-coordinators and also some of my family because I don't think I would want to study anywhere else. La Trobe has everything I want with regards to a comfortable atmosphere in the classroom and around campus. The lecturers and tutors are supportive and helpful and want to bring out the best in their students and are willing to help anyone who needs it

With regards to my course, I think it is great and it places you in a position where you can enter the tourism sector or into many other management positions. The course gives a firm grounding in all parts of business to either lead you into further education in a more specialized business area or into a more generalized area within the workforce. There are many interesting subjects and opportunities for students in this course.
