Mr Steven Hopgood

Course of study:
Bachelor of Accounting

When I decided to complete an undergraduate course in the specific area of Accounting, my main goal was to develop the skills and laying a foundation necessary to gain employment and growth within an accounting firm.

I entered Latrobe mid year in 2005 as a part time Mature-Age Student after attending an information session which really grabbed my attention. Having finished year 12 in 1996 and basically 10 years out of an academic mindset, I was a little nervous at first, however it is one of the best choices I have ever made.

I have been fortunate enough to gain employment in my chosen field of Accounting, commencing with Southern Cross Business Advisers two years ago whilst in my second year of studies. My plan is to complete my CPA once my undergraduate course is finished at La Trobe next year, with the goal of reaching partner level in a taxation and business advisory role. There is little doubt that La Trobe and the Bachelor of Accounting course has given me this opportunity to enter and grow in my chosen career path.

I firmly believe the Mildura campus is unique as we are privy to fantastic lecturers with not only strong academic backgrounds and knowledge but who also support active class participation. With the average class sizes being much smaller than that of city based campuses, this allows the students to be more involved in lectures and tutorials. The flow on effect from this is an opportunity to get the best out of yourself and in turn reflecting in better results.

The best advice I can give school leavers is knuckle down and complete a University degree as early as possible as this will open many doors for your career. Don’t take this time for granted, have fun but keep your eye on the ball. La Trobe will take you on a great journey which will be with you for life.
