Meet our student
Mr Geordie Wiseman
Course of study:
Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management; Economics and International Business)
I was interested in business, and enjoyed studying it in Year 12. I find it quite easy to understand so naturally it was something I was interested to persue. I felt that studying business at a tertiary level would provide good job prospects and it's a degree that you can use anywhere, from starting your own business to working in a multinational company. It gives you lots of different opportunities to travel and pursue what you want to do.
I finished year 12 in 2007, I didn’t want to go to uni straight away so I took a GAP year. I had a GAP year in the Australian Defence Force in 2008, which was amazing, and at the end of it I decided I wanted to continue my studies. I started my course at La Trobe in 2009 and now I’m in my second year.
During my experience at La Trobe, the teaching staff that I have come across have been really good. They are very approachable and more than willing to answer a question or help you outside of class if you need some extra help. The subjects have well detailed and outlined course guides that detail what you should be doing every week. What chapter to read, what tute questions you need to do. The administration staff looking after the business facility are great too. If I want to find out more information about a subject or plan out my course they arranged time for you to do so. As well as being very approachable just to answer any question anyone might have.
What I like most about studying at the Bendigo campus is the size of the campus its not massive like Melbourne and it doesn’t take that long to find your way around it. The facilities Bendigo offers are really good too. The library is massive, with nearly every book you could want and if they don’t have it they can get it from other campuses. There are also a number of computer rooms available for students to do assignments and check emails. The campus has a gym you can join and heaps of sporting clubs that you could be a part of. There are also facility clubs (Student Clubs) that run numerous activities and events throughout the year.
My tips for secondary students considering studying at uni is to do the best you can in year 12, get the best ENTER score you can. You might only use it once to get into the course you want but the higher the score the greater opportunities you have.Saying that, your ENTER score isn’t everything. There are always way’s to get into uni you just have to look into it. It could be doing a TAFE course or doing a slightly different uni course and transferring in the second year always options.
