Meet our student

Ms Rebecca Jade Martin

BBus La Trobe

Marketing Officer, La Trobe University

Course of study:
Bachelor of Business (Tourism and Hospitality) 2009
Master of Tourism

My undergraduate degree gave me a great foundation in business which I have used as a stepping stone to further develop specialist knowledge and research skills. I am thoroughly enjoying the challenges of my Master of Tourism degree and hope it will open doors for me in research, destination management and marketing.

I am on a half scholarship for tuition. I had hoped to pursue a master’s degree but was concerned about the cost. A scholarship provided me with the immediate opportunity and incentive I needed.

I participated in a student exchange program and travelled overseas. I made wonderful friends, saw incredible sights and had an enriching cultural experience. The exchange program also provided networking at an international scale and an invaluable global perspective. I also participated in a work experience program during my undergraduate degree with Rydges Hotels which landed me a job in front office reception.

I love campus life at La Trobe. The standard of teaching and services, such as our Language and Academic Skills (LAS) advisors, are wonderful. LAS advisors can help you to become a better student. Having studied at other faculties previously and cross institutionally, I am comfortable saying that La Trobe offers more than many other Australian Tertiary Institutions.

I live on campus at Barnes Way and being a Residential Assistant is fantastic! I've gotten to know my neighbours, made friends and feel more involved in community. There are regular social events and living is affordable as well as close to campus.

For those who are considering studying at university, don't choose your subjects based on what you "think" will look better, stick to your strengths and subjects you enjoy. Score the best you possibly can, and don't be disheartened if you don't land your first preference. Once your foot is in the door, if you study hard and maintain a good average you may be able to transfer or change your course of study later. I went from International Studies, to Animal Science, to Business till I found what I really enjoyed. It was hard for me to decide right away because I had so many different interests. I worked it out in the end and couldn't be happier with my decision!
