Mr Andy Vo

BBus La Trobe

Event Co-ordinator, Melbourne Victory Football Club

Course of study:
Bachelor of Business (Sport Management) 2009

There are so many thing I enjoyed about the course and La Trobe. First of all, the teaching staff were knowledgeable, enthusiastic and helpful when it came to teaching. It certainly was a breath of fresh air to be taught by a group which loved what they did and it showed in the way they taught. I also found the accessibility to the professional networks of the teaching staff, when it came to job hunting, and further learning very rewarding, just looking beyond the text books was a great way to enrich my learning experience. Furthermore, I liked the way La Trobe presents it’s students with opportunities, whether that was for me to go on exchange or to better myself on the sporting field.

Originally when I started this course I wanted to be a sports agent, however that was quickly pushed aside for new aspirations. Through my studies and the teaching staff, I was able to secure a contract with the Melbourne Victory Football Club’s event team as an event co-ordinator; which has allowed me to build my network and develop professionally. So it is fair to say that the course presented me with excellent career opportunities.

In 2008, I was fortunate enough to go on exchange to the University of Surrey, in Guildford, England. It was a magical experience, which allowed me to make friends with people from Sweden, Norway, Canada, USA and of course the UK, which I still keeping regular contact with. The exchange, really got me out of my comfort zone and forced me to adapt to foreign living conditions, it allowed me to grow as a student and develop on learning approaches which I bought back and used at La Trobe. Some highlights of my trip included, getting to go to a real English football match, embarking on a four week solo back-packing trip through six European countries, and making a load of quality friends.

In third year, I under took a ten week placement with Melbourne Victory Football Club, in their events department. The experience showed me what it was like to be working in the industry after university. It was honestly one of the highlights of my three years at uni, mainly because of the great sense of achievement and appreciation I received after the event was completed, and also the learning experience was priceless. I also found my job through the placement, so the experience was very positive indeed.

I really enjoyed the sporting facilities on campus. Since first year I played baseball for the La Trobe and I loved every minute of it since our facilities were the best in Victoria! It was great to hang around the Agora during breaks with friends as it provided us with all our dining needs and gave us a place to catch up on the things happening in life other than uni. The Borchardt Library is a wealth of information and the staff inside there also made studying easier by helping us find resources. Many of my friends who have attended other tertiary institutions are genuinely jealous of the social and interpersonal feel of La Trobe University.

The Bachelor of Business – Sport and leisure management, is an excellent course and graduating from it is definitely a milestone in my life. The information taught throughout the course it nothing short of relevant and practical, which is important for those wishing to work in the related industries post-university. I definitely recommend this course for those who have a passion for sport and its business elements.
