Course of study:
Master of Tourism

The Master of Tourism may be described as a ‘melting-pot’ of sociology, philosophy, anthropology, marketing, management, business and statistics (an unusual but interesting mixture!).

Cultural interactions really interest me, and therefore our TEX (The Tourism Experience) class is especially intriguing by revealing concepts regarding the identification of ‘self’ in travel, amongst other interesting and complex notions.

Our class consists of a small group of 17, which enables lecturers and students to know one another on a first name basis, rather than being a face in a sea of people!

I’m hoping to extend my studies by partaking in the Honours program (an additional 6 months). Consequentially, I can see my course motivating me to travel overseas to research tourism in relation to intercultural experiences.

The tourism industry offers a vast spectrum of career opportunities; ranging from destination development with regional councils to marketing/ policy/ resort and accommodation management with large scale tourism operators, just to mention a few. Although I haven’t pin-pointed my exact career path, I can imagine myself as a travel writer or academic in the future.

Here at the Bundoora La Trobe campus, we’re extremely fortunate to be surrounded by a vast natural landscape. I’ve been studying at La Trobe for almost 4 years now – and I still stumble upon ‘secret gardens’.

The campus is an uplifting place to be, due to La Trobe’s possession of a diverse and dynamic culture. This can be experienced by a trip to the central café hub, the ‘Agora’. The atmosphere here at La Trobe is simultaneously relaxed and energetic, where you’re able to chill out on the grass and read or socialise with mates at a café.
