Brief profile
Professor James Crawford is Whewell Professor of International Law in the University of Cambridge, and Research Professor of Law at La Trobe University. He is an academic and practitioner of public international law, and holds an active interest in all areas of the field. He is a former member of the International Law Commission and served in that capacity as Special Rapporteur for State Responsibility from 1997-2001. He was also responsible for the preparation of the ILC's Draft Statute for an International Criminal Court, the forerunner of the Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court. He has acted as advocate in 23 cases before the International Court of Justice, and has served as counsel and arbitrator before and on a variety of international courts and tribunals.
Professor Crawford's most recent scholarly work includes editing the 8th edition of Brownlie's Principles of Public International Law (OUP, 2012) and the preparation of his own State Responsibility: The General Part (CUP, 2013, forthcoming). He is scheduled to give the General Course of lectures at The Hague Academy of International Law in 2013.
Professor Crawford is Senior Editor of the British Yearbook of International Law. He is co-editor of the Cambridge University Press series Cambridge Studies in International and Comparative Law and the ICSID Reports. He serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of International Law, and is Senior Treasurer of the Cambridge Journal of International and Comparative Law.
Professor Crawford holds honourary doctorates from the Univerisity of Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbone and Pazmany Peter Catholic University, Budapest. He was awarded the Nessim Habif World Prize by the University of Geneva in 2010 and the Hudson Medel by the American Society of International Law in 2012.
