From evidence to practice: Supporting the decision-making participation of adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI)

This research aimed to explore the experiences of adults with TBI and those around them in making decisions about life after injury. Based on interviews with adults with TBI and the family, friends and professionals who support them, this presentation will outline a series of practice recommendations to maximise the decision-making participation of adults with TBI.

Jenna Mcnab, PhD candidate, LiDs Centre, La Trobe University

Fifty Shades of Grey: Interpretation of Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)

Article 12 of the UNCRPD is arguably its most important provision. Deemed to be the source of both the equal right to legal capacity for people with disability and the paradigm shift from substitute to supported decision-making, it has generated international discussion across academia, government and disability sectors. But the language of the text is ambiguous, its interpretation by the UNCRPD Committee ambitious, and adherence by State Parties lacking. This presentation will look at the fierce debate sparked by Article 12 and implications for current guardianship systems in Australia.
