"It's about time: Rethinking LGBTI Ageing in Australia"

3rd National LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care Conference

GLHV, Val's LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care, and the conference committee invite you to be part of the 3rd National lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) Ageing and Aged Care Conference, in Melbourne, Australia - 5 and 6 October, 2017.

This year's conference explores the ways in which aged and disability services can acknowledge the rich and challenging histories and changing lives of older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people and deliver truly LGBTI inclusive services.

Over both days, older LGBTI people and those who care for them will come together with aged and disability experts and service providers to share experiences and ideas, talk policy and practice, and connect over the common goal of promoting and achieving healthy pathways for older LGBTI people.

The Conference will explore how communities, governments, service providers and LGBTI people can work together to:

  • promote and provide healthy ageing pathways for LGBTI people
  • ensure the needs of LGBTI people are understood, respected and addressed in Australia's aged and disability care policies, programs and services.

The conference promises to be an informative and exciting event so be sure to register early and secure your place. With the resounding successes of the previous LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care conferences, the 2017 Conference is sure to fill early. There are attractive early bird and group discount rates available.

Call for presentations

Call for presenters open: Be part of the 3rd National LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care Conference, It's about time!

The conference organising committee is inviting submissions from aged and disability care providers, health and community services, government - Commonwealth, State and Local, researchers, other relevant professionals from management to front line staff, and particularly older LGBTI people, LGBTI people with a disability, their families (biological or 'of choice'), partners and friends who support or care for an older LGBTI person or LGBTI person with a disability.

The event is hosted by Val's LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care @ GLHV on the 5th and 6th October at Novotel Melbourne on Collins.

It's About Time aims to explore how communities, governments, service providers and older LGBTI people work together to promote healthy ageing outcomes for older LGBTI people.

It also looks at how aged care policies, programs and services can better understand and meet the needs of older LGBTI people.

The conference seeks capture the diversity of LGBTI people's identities, experiences and needs, and look at how differences in sexual orientation, trans and gender diverse identities and intersex variations intersect with other characteristics to enrich and/or complicate the lives of LGBTI people. These may include: age; health; disability; socio economic status; cultural and linguistic diversity; faith and spirituality; those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds; and other aspects of culture.

Who should submit?

The conference organising committee is inviting submissions from a range of voices: aged and disability care providers; health and community services; government - Commonwealth, State and Local; researchers; other relevant professionals from management to front line staff; families, friends and carers; and particularly the voices of older LGBTI people and LGBTI people with a disability.

It is vital that we foreground the voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex older people and those with a disability, and that we recognise the diversity within the LGBTI communities.
