Dalmatia and Ancient Greece: the La Trobe Connection

La Trobe University, in collaboration with Voyages to Antiquity, is delighted to present the inaugural La Trobe University Alumni Tour.

Join us on board the luxury MV Aegean Odyssey for an unforgettable journey from Venice to Athens along the beautiful Adriatic coast in late summer, an ideal time for Mediterranean cruising.

Explore the wonders of Italy, Dalmatia and Greece, brought to life through the expertise of La Trobe University’s Dr Gillian Shepherd, as well as special additional tours and events exclusive to La Trobe Alumni and Friends of the Trendall Centre.

Discover the beauties of Venice and see Renaissance masterpieces at Urbino, visit the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s palace in Split, admire the natural wonders of Kotor Bay (Europe’s southernmost fjord) and explore the classical ruins of Sarande in Albania.

This voyage also takes you to ancient Olympia, home of the Olympic Games, and Pylos with its huge natural harbour, castle and surrounding pine-covered hills. Before reaching Athens there is time to call at Hydra, one of Greece’s most charming and picturesque islands.

Then discover La Trobe’s classical heritage in Athens, with a visit to the Agora, birthplace of democracy, and the ancient Theatre of Dionysos, the model for La Trobe’s Moat Theatre.

On-board lecturer - Dr Gillian Shepherd, La Trobe University

Dr Gillian Shepherd is Director of the A.D. Trendall Research Centre and Lecturer in Ancient Mediterranean Studies at La Trobe University. She studied Classics and Fine Arts at the University of Melbourne before going on to complete a PhD in Classical Archaeology at Trinity College, Cambridge, and a research fellowship at St Hugh's College, Oxford.

Until her return to Australia in 2012 to take up her position at La Trobe University, Gillian was Lecturer in Classical Archaeology at the University of Birmingham.

Her research examines ancient Greek colonisation of South Italy and Sicily, especially burial customs, and her work in classical archaeology and art has led her to travel extensively in the Mediterranean.

Gillian has also led tours for many years in Greece and Italy and has previously travelled four times with Voyages to Antiquity as a ship’s lecturer. She describes the cruises as “one of the best things I get to do – the perfect combination of relaxation, interest, lovely weather, great food, and good company”.

Gillian will be on board throughout the Dalmatia and Ancient Greece cruise to guide you through the ancient world, answer all your questions and enrich your cultural holiday experience.
