The last ten years have been marked by enormous growth in the extent and range of technology use in Higher Education. This seminar will examine a curriculum design intervention, the Course Design Intensives (CDIs), originally developed at Oxford Brookes University in the UK as part of an institutional effort to significantly upscale technology-enhanced learning. The CDI process aims at course-level, rather than unit-level design. It uses an expanded team-based approach to designing technology-enhanced learning, where the academic team is joined by other professionals such as learning technologists, educational developers, course administrators and subject librarians.

Greg Benfield leads the CDI process at Oxford Brookes University. His presentation might be read at various levels: as a description of the process, with its benefits and challenges; at another level, as a plea to transform ‘business as usual’ in the curriculum design process in universities.

Greg is a Senior Lecturer/Educational Developer (Learning Technologies) in the Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning Development (OCSLD) at Oxford Brookes University, UK. Originally from Melbourne, Australia, where he taught Mathematics in the secondary, TAFE (Technical and Further Education) and Higher Education sectors, he joined OCSLD in January 2001. His work focuses on supporting technology-enriched learning and he teaches on the Postgraduate Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education. He is a Fellow of the Assessment Standards Knowledge exchange (ASKe). As well as his work at Brookes he delivers national workshops on e-learning and assessment and has been involved in a range of national JISC and Higher Education Academy e-learning projects. He pioneered and leads the Course Design Intensive (CDI) approach to curriculum development and renewal at Brookes and in other UK universities.
