La Trobe University’s Access and Achievement Research Unit (AARU) invites you to the second annual ‘Access and Achievement Research Forum’. The Forum will showcase the work of researchers at the University who are investigating the experiences of under-represented groups in education.
The Forum will commence with keynote presentations from Professor Trevor Gale, Deakin University, and Mary Kelly, Queensland University of Technology. The afternoon will continue with break-out sessions comprising presentations from La Trobe staff and postgraduate students focusing on issues of equity, diversity and social inclusion in education.
Lunch will be provided and travel bursaries are available for staff travelling from regional campuses.

Professor Trevor Gale
Keynote presentation: 'Conceptions of student transition in higher education: induction, development, becoming’
Professor Trevor Gale is Chair in Education Policy and Social Justice at Deakin University. He is a critical sociologist of education, with research interests in policy and social justice, particularly in the fields of schooling and higher education. He is the founding editor of Critical Studies in Education and is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Inclusive Education. Trevor’s opinions are frequently requested by government and the media and he is a regular keynote speaker at conferences in Australia and overseas.
Mary Kelly
Keynote presentation: ‘A state-wide approach to widening tertiary participation’
Mary Kelly is Equity Director of the Queensland University of Technology. Mary is one of the leaders of a state-wide approach to widening tertiary participation in Queensland which aims to stimulate interest in tertiary study for low income and Indigenous people. This involves collaboration between all eight public universities in Queensland and the Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE). This year, Mary Kelly was named as one of The Australian’s top 50 most influential people in higher education.
