Does water policy and management make use of the best available science?
The nexus between good science and good policy outcomes appears self-evident although it is not always the case that this is clear cut. There are serious questions about the extent to which:
- Science is well suited to delivering the information and advice required by policy makers and practitioners, and.
- Policy makers are able to absorb and promote the development of good science.
These themes will be explored in the 5th Annual Water Forum at La Trobe University, Albury-Wodonga on Thursday, 8 November. As with earlier events, the aim is to bring together policy makers, resource managers and researchers with an interest in improving the allocation and management of water resources in Australia. This is a multi-disciplinary event with lessons for a range of audiences, especially those working in water management for the environment and urban water.
The Mann Lecture on Wednesday, 7 November at the Albury-Wodonga campus will precede the forum and set the scene for exploring important questions relating to science, policy and practice. The Lecture in 2012 will be delivered by Professor Ian Chubb AC, Australia’s Chief Scientist.
The forum will comprise a number of keynote presentations by some of Australia’s most influential scientists and policy makers working in water resource management. In addition to more generic discussions on the science/policy nexus, specific examples will be highlighted drawing on work undertaken in the management of environmental water and urban water.
