An important part of the learning process is concerned with making connections. Connecting words, numbers, concepts and ideas can be quite an internalised experience. Learning also happens through social connection. Whether networked learning happens face to face or online, it involves extrinsic communication.
Looking to the future, La Trobe students are being encouraged to connect with the workplace and business through work placements and internships. Learning will be further enriched by connecting with the world through study abroad, study tours, exchanges and development projects. Connecting to the community through leadership, mentoring and volunteering programs affords increasing opportunities for learning. Connecting teaching to research highlights how research is increasingly cross-disciplinary and complex. These and other connections are about providing varied pathways and increasing opportunities for students, and helping them to prepare for the challenges that the 21st Century presents.
The Colloquium 2012 is a chance to celebrate the learning connections that have been created in 2012 and to discuss new connections that could be made in the future. It is also an opportunity for participants to connect with each others' work and share ideas in new ways.
