Master of Ergonomics, Safety and Health (M.ESH) - Distance Mode

The Master of Ergonomics, Safety and Health is offered for distance mode study over a minimum of two years part-time (three years for a Masters with Honours)

Year 1 (part time)

This also constitutes the first year of the Master of Occupational Health (M.OH). That is, the two Masters courses share a common first year.
Students enrolled in either the M.ESH or the M.OH who successfully complete this first year and decide to discontinue their studies at that point will be awarded a Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health, Safety and Ergonomics.

The four subjects comprising this first year of the M.ESH are:
HBS4/5WDH Work-related determinants of health
OCT4/5OHA OH&S principles and legislation
HBS4/5ERG Principles of work, workstation and plant design
OCT4/5OHC Screening and monitoring in OH&S

Year 2 (part-time)

HBS4/5EAM Monitoring and assessment of physical and psychosocial hazards
HBS4/5RPP Workplace risk management & practice principles (taken also by M.OH students)
HBS4/5WAM Workplace applications of monitoring and assessment methods
HBS4/5MSD Prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders

In the middle of the year, students may apply for entry into an Honours program (entry based on academic merit), which requires an additional part-time year of study.

Students who are not taking the Honours program will graduate at the end of Year 2 with a Master of Ergonomics, Safety and Health (M.ESH).

Year 3 (part-time) M.ESH Honours Program

The two subjects comprising this Honours program for the M.ESH are:
- A graduate research methods subject (content appropriate to the planned thesis research topic)
- HBS5HON M.ESH Thesis.

Students who successfully complete this year will graduate with a M.ESH (Hons).

Fees
In 2010, tuition fees for the above Masters program are expected to be $6,850 per part-time year (four subjects). That is: the cost is expected to be $1,712.50 per 15 credit point subject; $13,700 for the M.ESH (two years, part-time – eight subjects); and $20,550 for the M.ESH with Honours (three years part-time).

Professional recognition

M.ESH graduates will have completed all educational requirements for practice as both a generalist OH&S professional and as a Certified Professional Ergonomist.

Ergonomics is an area of specialist practice within OH&S. La Trobe University graduates have a particular advantage since the course is informed by our ergonomics research on the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and on the management of psychosocial hazards, which are the two largest challenges currently confronting OH&S professionals in industrially developed countries throughout the world.

Following graduation, full professional status requires completion of specified periods of supervised professional practice, prior to applying for certification as a generalist OHS professional or to become a Certified Professional Ergonomist.
