Master of Ergonomics, Safety and Health (M.ESH) - Distance Mode

The Master of Ergonomics, Safety and Health is offered for distance mode study over a minimum of three years part-time.

Year 1 (part time)

The four subjects comprising this first year of the M.ESH are:
HBS5WDH Work-related determinants of health
OCT5OHA OH&S principles and legislation
HBS5ERG Ergonomics principles of work, workstation and plant design
OCT5OHC Monitoring of hazardous substances in OH&S

Students who successfully complete this first year and decide to discontinue their studies at that point will be awarded a Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health, Safety and Ergonomics.

Year 2 (part-time)

HBS5EAM Monitoring and assessment of physical and psychosocial hazards
HBS5RPP Workplace risk management principles & practice
HBS5WAM Workplace applications of monitoring and assessment methods
HBS5MSD Prevention of work-related musculoskeletal injuries/disorders

It should be noted that some of these subjects need to be taken sequentially, students who enter mid-year or elect to take one subject at a time may find they need to take a semester break at some point in their studies.

Students who exit after satisfactory completion of Year 1 and 2 subjects will be awarded a Graduate Diploma in Ergonomics, Safety and Health.

Year 3 (part-time)

Students will need to select either Mode 1 or Mode 2 depending on their interests. It is possible to change your mode prior to commencement of the third year. You will need to make an initial selection on entering the program but this can be altered.

It is suggested that students who are interested in undertaking further research studies select Mode 2 as it will provide them with the necessary prerequisites for a PhD or professional doctorate.

Professional recognition

M.ESH graduates will have completed all educational requirements for practice as both a generalist OH&S professional and as a Certified Professional Ergonomist.

Ergonomics is an area of specialist practice within OH&S. La Trobe University graduates have a particular advantage since the course is informed by our ergonomics research on the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and on the management of psychosocial hazards, which are the two largest challenges currently confronting OH&S professionals in industrially developed countries throughout the world.

Following graduation, full professional status requires completion of specified periods of supervised professional practice, prior to applying for certification as a generalist OHS professional or to become a Certified Professional Ergonomist.
