Instructions for accessing RDS

Access to the Research Disk Storage (RDS) can only be done through secure means using your Active Directory credentials.

If you aren’t in La Trobe’s Active Directory, then you can’t access the files. If, as a staff member, you wish to attach external colleagues then they have to be in the AD authentication system. They can be put in there by filling out a Computer Account form. Note that you can sign on their behalf if required.

You can mount the storage directory on the desktop of your Windows, MacOSX or Linux system using SMB (Windows protocol compatible with Mac and Linux as well) or use web HTTPS or FTPs.

Personal directories are available automatically. Project directories must be requested by email to ict.servicedesk@latrobe.edu.au or ersearch@latrobe.edu.au or created via RIC (research Sharepoint portal).

Accessing Personal Files

Windows using SMB

Right-click the desktop Computer icon, select Map network drive… and use the following info, or in a command windows type

net use x:\\rdusers.latrobe.edu.au\users\LTU\username

where x: is a drive of your choice and username is your AD username. If you are a postgraduate with only a student account use STUDENTS instead of LTU.

MacOSX using SMB

In the Finder desktop select Go, then Connect to Server… then type in the Server Address dialog box

smb://rdusers.latrobe.edu.au/users/LTU/username

with the same parameters as noted in Windows above.

Linux using SMB

Using the Nautilus file browser (from gnome) as an example, from the “File/Connect to Server” menu (replace “mkosten” with your username):

Linking to Research Disk Storage with Linux using SMB

SMB outside the Uni (VPN)

You can mount a drive from outside the University using the above commands but you will need to establish a VPN first.

Please go to the VPN web site for VPN documentation and software for your computer.

FTPs/webdav

In the near future you will be able to access files directly and more efficiently from outside La Trobe using FTP and webdav.

For FTP, in any operating system in a browser address box type:

ftp://rdusers.latrobe.edu.au/users/LTU/username

where username is your username. You will be required to enter your username and password.

To mount a webdav drive you need “add disk/server” feature of your operating system (as noted above) and use the appropriate details.  This is normally:

http://rdusers.latrobe.edu.au/users/LTU/username:8000

Accessing files from Project accounts

If you require a sharable storage area for a group (such as in a laboratory, a set of colleagues, supervisor/student or a temporary project work group) then you can request this from ICT or eResearch Office or create it in the collaboration system called RIC. You can have multiple project storage accounts.

The project storage area is “owned” by a Chief Investigator (or leader or prime contact for the group) and others from Active Directory can be attached with read/write or read-only privileges. People can be detached, authorization status changed or new people attached at any time.

For the project storage to be created you will need to provide a project name (a reasonably short string of characters/numbers to describe your project) and usernames of any others you wish to attach in the first instance and their authorization level (write or read-only).

Mount the drive using the following details for Windows:

net use x: \\rdprojects.latrobe.edu.au\projects\username

where x: is a drive of your choice and username is your AD username.

For MacOSX in the Finder desktop select Go, then Connect to Server… then type in the Server Address dialog box:

smb://rdprojects.latrobe.edu.au/projects/username

with the same parameters as noted in Windows above.

If you are at the Wodonga campus you can use the local storage system. For example, on Windows:

net use x: \\rdsaw.latrobe.edu.au\projects\username

The parameters above for FTP, webdav and so on are the same for project files.
