VeRSI projects

VeRSI is a State Government funded Program to provide a coordinated approach to accelerating the uptake of e-Research by Victorian researchers. VeRSI is a collaboration between the Victorian Universities, concentrating on capability building and supporting projects within the Universities.

VeRSI has contributed to the strategic development of scientific effort in Victoria and has provided leadership in fostering national and international contacts for the Victorian eResearch community.

Current Projects
Department Primary researcher/contact Project description
Historical & Cultural Studies Richard Collmann

3D Rig

Development of a mobile virtual 3D imaging rig for imaging objects of cultural significance.

Life Sciences Professor Liam O'Connor

Development of visualisation lab

Visualisation capability including; visualisation wall, HD videoconferencing.

Library/ICT Michael Wood (Library)

Development of research data repositories

This project funds the development of infrastructure required for long-term (archive) stoarge and retrieval of such data. This will include equipment for archiving, software development for repositories in specific disciplines, policies for long-term archiving of research material and repositories for metadata in specific disciplines.

Library/ICT Peter Harms (ICT)

Development of General Research Database Service

This project develops a cloud-based research database serviced from ICT that will handle data containment requirements from research, eResearch and the Library.

Library & Research Services Geoff Payne

Metadata Store

LTU has received a $225k grant from ANDS (The Australian National Data Service) to develop a Metadata Store. This project will establish mechanisms to; manage descriptions of data collections held at La Trobe, enable discovery and reuse of data collections held at La Trobe, support strategic planning for research at La Trobe and ensure high quality of metadata.

Trendall Research Centre for Ancient Mediterranean Studies Dr Ian McPhee

Trendall collection

Curation and digitisation of Trendall collection.

Computer Science Keith Savin

Bioinformatics Toolbox

(Middleware to help researchers use bioinformatics tools, using postgraduate scholarships under the guidance of Associate Professor Samar Singh, Computer Science, with DPI at Bundoora and Attwood)

Physics Associate Professor Paul Pigram

Development of visualisation lab

Visualisation capability including; visualisation wall, HD videoconferencing.

Physics Associate Professor Paul Pigram

Virtual Beam Line for Synchrotron

The Virtual Beam Line (VBL), allows for remote monitoring and use of the Synchrotron from a central point on the La Trobe campus, thus alleviating travel and data handling difficulties.

Researchers can manipulate samples via motor controls, acquire data, transfer data between storage and compute resources and collaborate using voice, video and shared applications.

Physics Associate Professor Paul Pigram

Shared Laboratory Instrumentation by remote access

(access to expensive instruments remotely and integration with repositories, under the guidance of Associate Professor Paul Pigram, Physics).

View a video about the features of the remote access laboratory.

Environmental Management & Ecology Associate Professor Phil Suter

VeRSI Ecoinformatics Platform and Application Demonstrator

(a climate change project, with key researcher Associate Professor Phil Suter, Environmental Management and Ecology at Albury-Wodonga, and DPI and Monash)
