Governance

Strategy

The e-Research Office was formed in April 2007 after an agreement was reached between the CIO and DVC (Research) to transfer staff and funding for initial creation of the Office. This interim arrangement was to provide an immediate need for a focus point for VeRSI and other internal and external activities that needed full-time support in the e-Research sphere.

The Director, e-Research (formerly Director, ITS) developed a proposal for the Office that was completed in May 2007, and which included budgeting for 2008-2010. Also at this time a draft strategic plan was produced to provide a framework for activity until the University completed its wider strategic planning.

The governance framework for the Office is also provided in the RCAC Terms of Reference below.

Research Computing Advisory Committee

This is an advisory committee to the DVC (Research) with the primary role of advising the DVC (Research) on high level computing requirements and helping in the dissemination of information on what resources and support are available. The committee promotes e-Research in the University and aims to increase the profile of research computing and e-research methods in the University. The Committee provides a forum for consideration of requests for significant and/or unusual data storage, networking, computing and curation, discovery and access requirements in the research area. Desktop requirements (software, hardware, support) and administrative computing will normally not be covered.

The Committee provides an opportunity for information gathering and exchange amongst all the parties. It supplies information to the Faculties about central and external computing facilities the University has access to, information to the central service areas regarding research ICT and reference needs and advice and feedback to the Director, e-Research on policy and processes for e-Research, along with advice and feedback to the University Librarian on information curation, discovery and access. It also guides the CIO on future system and network requirements for research.

The Committee is comprised of Director e-Research (chair of the committee), CIO, University Librarian and Associate Deans (Research)or equivalent or nominee from each Faculty.
