Clinical Commuications Assistance Scheme (C-CAS)

The aims of the project were to:

Develop a clinical readiness screening tool for use with speech pathology students from Human Communication Sciences – this was achieved.

Use the screening tool to identify students who may benefit from support to enhance their clinical communication skills– this was achieved.

Provide a speech pathology intervention service for students requiring additional support to develop clinical communication skills – this was achieved.

Rural Careers Access: Online Employer Portal for Shepparton Students

The aim of the project was to provide students with information about businesses/organisations in the Shepparton area that wished to engage in some way with La Trobe students and graduates. It also aimed to provide employers with an opportunity to promote their businesses to the La Trobe community at no cost.

The project successfully accomplished these aims.  In addition a website was developed with the capacity to be rolled out to all regional campuses.

Promoting university study options for rural and regional secondary school students

The project seeks to work collaboratively with Bendigo secondary colleges to provide mentoring and academic support to Year 10, 11 and 12 students.  La Trobe University academics and support staff will provide additional learning opportunities through the provision of sessions at both the university campus and secondary college campuses.  Students interested in particular study/career pathways will be linked with relevant academics to inform, give advice, support and encourage the student’s intended future career.

The La Trobe/Discovery ‘Reach for the Stars’ Science and Technology Career Fair

The project aims to inspire Year 9 - 12 students to pursue interests in Maths and Science.  A one-day Careers Expo will be held during National Science Week at the Discovery Science and Technology Centre in Bendigo.

The mapping of undergraduate student peer mentoring programs in a multi-Faculty, multi-campus higher education context catering for diverse student needs.

The project aims to map the significant growth in undergraduate peer mentoring programs at LTU across Faculties and non-Faculty departments, and develop an organisational model for peer mentoring and peer tutoring.

Arts Skills:  A program designed for first year B.A. students to maximise retention rates.

The project aims to enhance the retention rates of students who commenced the Bachelor of Arts program in 2009.  The program targets students from Low SES areas and from regional areas and includes a one-hour session each week for six weeks, commencing in Week Two of semester.  Experienced staff will be invited to be guest speakers on specialised topics.

This Place Nurtures Good Relationships:  the prevention of sexual violence among university students.

The project aims to extend the work done in a previous VicHealth funded project “Respect, Responsibility and Equality:  Prevention of violence against women”.  The project includes interactive sessions with a broader range of student groups such as sporting clubs and other clubs and societies.

Disability and Transition:  Student Narratives of Connection into La Trobe University

This project investigates the experience of students with a disability entering first year at La Trobe University in 2010.  It will increase understanding of what helps and hinders this transition.  The approach taken is collaborative inquiry, using narrative and other arts-based methods, centred around a series of three workshops and an LMS site that will record students’ reflections on experience.

Establishment of a La  Trobe University Women’s AFL  Team

The program aims to assist the retention rates of students by providing social and support networks.  It will also create a safe and fun environment in which women can participate in AFL. 

Final report:  The team was established and has now been extended to Bendigo campus.  The Equality and Diversity Centre is now a sponsor for the La Trobe Women’s AFL team.
Pathways to support students with speech & language skills required in clinical practice.

The project aims to support students enrolled in Human Communication Sciences to ensure they have the necessary speech and language skills required for clinical practice.  It will particularly target students from non-English speaking backgrounds, and students with a disability.

Providing middle years students (Yrs 9 & 10) with an opportunity to attend interactive workshops in the emerging sciences.

The program aims to create a shift in students’ career aspirations to science related careers, and also enhance their choices of career pathways, by offering exciting and engaging hands-on practical workshops. The workshop program will be developed by experienced high school teachers in collaboration with scientists, and the workshops will be delivered by Honours and PhD students.  This will give the high school students the opportunity to interact with young scientists.  The project will target low SES students in metropolitan and rural SALT schools.

E-friends to support pre-transitions and university transition for rural and isolated students

This project employs a pre-transition and transition strategy using contemporary social networking technologies with a view to improving the transition experience of rural and isolated students at Albury Wodonga Campus.

Scoping for outreach to rural and isolated schools using video conference facilities

This project will provide an important foundation to help operationalise the Regional School Engagement Strategy, which is a critical component of the University’s wider commitment to raise interest and participation in higher education amongst rural and isolated students.

Games Design and Development Outreach Program

This project aims to encourage under-represented students (women and SALT school students) to consider a career in both Information Technology and Games Development, ultimately leading to an increase in the percentage of women and Low SES students working in these areas.

Numeracy support pilot program

Rural students have been identified as reaching lower numeracy benchmarks than those students in metropolitan areas.  This program seeks to determine the nature of the numeracy problems experienced by students at Bendigo campus, to identify those students at risk and to instigate an effective intervention program and to evaluate the outcomes.

Numeracy support pilot program – Computer and human interface

This project will work closely with the regional Numeracy support program, and will involve the construction of four compulsory on-line randomized but repeatable basic skills proficiency tests, which will be developed and trialled for professional quantitative courses in all La Trobe campuses.  This will assist La Trobe to become a leader in successful mathematics training for a diversifying student body.

Reviewing La Trobe University’s entry processes for Non English Speaking Background (NESB) students

This project will investigate current practices and will recommend changes to ensure that adequate English language levels are met as part of the admission process of NESB students.
