Merit based staff selection

Merit Based Staff Selection is a key strategy to address past and current discrimination. It refers to the appointment of the best available applicant for a job in open competition.

In order to practice Merit based selection applicants are measured against established selection criteria without reference to irrelevant characteristics such as race or sex.

Adherence to set procedures, as outlined in the La Trobe recruitment and selection policy, promotes uniformity and fairness and is essential in removing the potential for bias and personal prejudice. It also ensures the employment of the best person for the job.

Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace does not mean that a woman, or a person from an ethnic minority, must be selected regardless of merit. It means selection is by merit alone.
