ALLY Network at La Trobe

The ALLY network consists of staff and students who have undertaken ALLY training to improve their awareness around issues specific to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (GLBTIQ) individuals at La Trobe.  Allies work to support and affirm the experiences of the GLBTIQ members of the university, and cultivate a culture of diversity with a zero tolerance attitude towards exclusion and discrimination on the grounds of sexuality or gender identity.

ALLY network and the Equality and Diversity Centre

The ALLY network is administered and implemented by La Trobe's Equality and Diversity Centre (EDC). The EDC works to ensure that all staff and students have equal access to the benefits and opportunities at La Trobe University.  The EDC provides information and support on the various university, state and federal policies that protect individuals from harassment and discrimination. The EDC also has in place procedures and advice on making a complaint and they should be contacted if you wish to lodge a grievance.

What does an ALLY do?

An ALLY is committed to creating an inclusive and respectful culture at La Trobe University for GLBTIQ community members. At La Trobe Allies can be recognised by the La Trobe ALLY logo and are listed in the ALLY contact list. GLBTIQ staff and students can approach ALLY Network Members for confidential advice and support.

Allies are not all experts in the areas of sexuality and gender identity, however as allies they can assist you in finding the information that you need, or refer you to someone who can assist. An ALLY is NOT a counsellor, if a counselling service or

emergency assistance is what you require then please contact one of the services listed in related links.

The La Trobe ALLY network aims are

  • To create an identifiable and supportive network of GLBTIQ Allies at La Trobe through the displaying of the La Trobe ALLY logo in their office space.
  • Provide a welcoming and confidential 'safe zone' for GLBTIQ staff and students.
  • Work to create safer campuses for GLBTIQ staff and students through the combating of discrimination and exclusion.
  • Work to increase awareness around GLBTIQ issues.
