Pilot recycling program

In 2006 EnviroSMART initiated a recycling pilot program to provide better office recycling facilities, engage staff in improved recycling practices and to determine the best ways to recycle at La Trobe. The program involved staff from Finance, Buildings and Grounds in David Myers, and Academic Services and Buildings and Grounds in Peribolos East.

Waste audits of these divisions showed the three quarters of the office waste was made up of recyclable items. An average of 74% of general waste was made up of paper (39%), co-mingled products (11%) and organic material (24%). For a breakdown of each individual area see the waste audit results below.

Overall waste audit findings

The office recycling program is designed to encourage behaviour change toward more environmentally-sustainable workplace practices and includes such measures as:

  • Replacing the waste bin under each staff desk with a small desktop bin in order to discourage waste generation;
  • Providing each desk with a paper recycling box;
  • Placing a co-mingled recycling bin in each office kitchen area to encourage the recycling of glass, plastics and aluminium; and,
  • Continuing audit assessments of waste generated by each pilot office.
