Office Bokashi

Several office areas around the Bundoora Campus are no longer sending their food scraps and tea bags to landfill. Buildings and Grounds Division have installed Bokashi buckets in several office kitchenettes. Bokashi uses micro-organisms to ferment organic waste without any odour.

The buckets can accept just about any organic waste including tissues, citrus, meat and tea bags. The only care that the Bokashis require is a daily sprinkling of the Bokashi mix that contains the micro-organisms and regular draining of the liquid. Once the buckets are full, the nutrient-rich fermented waste is used by the new Bundoora Community Garden.

Each office Bokashi unit requires a co-ordinator to ensure that the system is properly maintained. The co-ordinator is responsible for informing other staff in the relevant office area of the system and to ensure that the liquid is drained, the lid closed firmly and an appropriate amount of Bokahi mix is applied when required.

If you are interested in having a Bokashi system implemented in your area, require assistance with your current Bokashi or would like to provide feedback or suggestions, please complete the Bokashi request form (LTU staff only).

If you are not a staff member at La Trobe and would like further general information on our system, please send an email to envirosmart@latrobe.edu.au
