La Trobe receives Waste Wise Silver Accreditation
La Trobe University has achieved Waste Wise Silver Accreditation from Sustainability Victoria. The Waste Wise program is a Sustainability Victoria initiative that sees large organisations such as universities volunteer to reduce waste by developing and implementing a waste reduction plan. There are three levels of accreditation: Bronze, Silver and Gold. La Trobe University received Bronze in December 2007.
Some of our waste reduction actions/outcomes included:
- Reduction in recyclables to landfill from office by 25%
- Expansion of the Office Recycling Program to other campuses
- Energy, Waste and Water audits conducted as part of the EPA’s Energy and Resource Efficiency Program
- Draft Environmental Sustainability Policy and Environmental Management Plans
- Establishment of an over-arching Sustainability Taskforce
- Monthly openings of the Furniture Shed
- Bokashi Compost Trial
This is a great achievement as it indicates that La Trobe University is committed to zero waste in the long term and engaged in greater waste reduction across all it campuses in particular the Bundoora campus.
