This Department has academic and adjunct/honorary staff members actively involved in research and offers Honours, Masters and PhD programs. The research areas include aquatic research, functional morphology, taxonomy and phylogeny, population ecology, community ecology, alpine ecology, and environmental modelling.

The Department collaborates with Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre and the Research Centre for Applied Alpine Ecology.
