Research ProgramsThe Department offers two research degree: Master of Engineering by Research - (SMER) and the Doctor of Philophy (PhD) . Both require students to undertake an extensive research project. The degrees differ in the extent and depth of the research undertaken. To obatin a PhD candiates must make a substantial and original contributiion to knowledge. The normal period of candiature for a Master degree by research is two year full-time or four years part-time. The normal period of candiaturre for a PhD is between three and four years for a full time candiate and between four and eight years for a part-time candiate. For both degrees assessment is by thesis.
Entry Requirements for Research ProgramsMaster of Engineering by Research - (SMER) An appropriate first-degree in Electronics and/or Communications. Doctor of Philophy (PhD) A first or upper second-class honours degree or recognised Master degree. Candiates who do not meet these requirements may be allowed to upgrade from a Master of Engineering to a Doctor of Philosophy after a period of study during which they demonstrate their ability for independent high level research.
Entry Requirements for Research ProgramsScholarships There are a number of scholarships available fo students undertaking postgraduate research degrees. These are the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), the La Trobe University Postgraduate Scholarships (LTUPRS) and the International Postgraduate Research Scheme (IRIS). APAs are available to Australian Citizens and permanent residents and provides a living allowance. LTUPRSs' are available to both overseas and local applicants and provide a living allowance. The IPRS is open to international students only and covers tution fees. Applicants for scholarships are extremely competitive and only outstanding applicants are successful. Part-time TeachingMost research postgraduate students and some coursework postgraduate students are employed by the Department for a few hours per week to assist with laboratory demonstrating, tutoring or assignment marking. This provides postgraduate an opportunity to gain experience in teaching and to supplement their income.
