Contact with the School of Educational Studies

Academics seeking approval of Visiting Scholar status must make email contact with a potential host in the SES to secure initial approval. Academic staff profiles can be accessed at the School of Educational Studies staff profiles page. A full CV must be provided by the visitor and the application must be directed to the Research co-ordinator using this Visitor's enquiry form (PDF/11KB), (RTF/6.2KB).

School approval process

  • Staff members forward all requests for visitor status to the Coordinator of Research and Postgraduate students in the School of Educational Studies, who will present the applications to School Executive for approval or otherwise. Each request should be accompanied by the full CV and a letter of support from the member of staff, indicating his or her willingness to coordinate the activities of the visitor to ensure policy requirements are met. The application must be approved by the Dean.

    University approval process

  • A memo in support of the application, outlining the intended activities of the visitor, the full CV, the duration of the visit, and the name of the nominated host within the School is forwarded to the Head of Personnel who issues a letter of invitation to the visitor, who must sign acceptance of the conditions.

    Expectations

  • Visiting scholars are required to complete and submit for publication one article with the host staff member, and to present at least one seminar to staff and students during the duration of the stay. In addition, there is the condition that La Trobe University is acknowledged on any published material produced as a result of the visit.

    Report on progress

  • Host staff members will introduce visitors at a staff meeting and will report to the HOS on progress mid-way through the visitor's visit, and on conclusion of the visit.

    Health Insurance

  • Visiting academics from overseas must obtain a visa at their local Australian embassy after presenting the letter of invitation from the Head of Personnel. The visa issued will not be a student visa, so Medicare is not available to the visitor. DIMIA holds the University liability for all medical and other Commonwealth costs incurred by the visitor. The University in turn places this liability onto the School. For this reason, the visitor must provide to the Higher Degrees Administrator evidence of Australian health care insurance prior to approval of the visit, or if this is not possible, on arrival in Australia.

Concurrent enrolment at another Institution in Australia

  • Visiting scholar status cannot be approved if the visitor is simultaneously enrolled in a formal program at another University. Any visitor enrolled in a formal program at another Australian Educational Institution has been issued with a Student Visa. Consequently, the visitor's visa will be examined on arrival to verify its subclass.

    Office accommodation

  • Approved visitors will be provided with access to a room, desk, computer and a telephone service limited to internal calls.

    Library access

  • The Higher Degrees Administrator normally arranges this via a memo to the Loans Desk and Facilities and Services. The Library issues the visitor with an Honorary Staff Card which allows unlimited borrowing.

    Orientation

  • A booklet describing the University services, and some general Melbourne information will be given to the visitor on arrival by way of a welcome. An email will be sent by the host staff member to all staff advising of the visitor's arrival, his/her area of expertise, and with an invitation to introduce themselves to the visitor.
