Student Travel

The University now requires all students proposing to travel overseas for study, research, conference attendance, or any other activity associated with their course of study, to inform the University of their plans and to secure permission from the Deputy Vice Chancellor's office 21 days before departure.

To secure travel approval, students must supply written evidence of adequate insurance cover (private or University) for their total period of absence. (More detailed information is available on the Student Travel Forms).

This ruling is designed to ensure that the University does not inadvertently place students at risk and that the University can contact students in case of emergency. It is also intended to clarify the insurance status of students absent from the University for study, research, conferences and the like. More information....

The following procedure applies to those students intending to travel overseas:

  1. Students proposing to travel on international exchange, UMAP, UMIOR, INU or Vice Chancellor's Language Scholarship programs must apply for permission through the International Programs Office (IPO). To secure permission in time to meet the 21 day deadline students are advised to submit completed applications to the IPO at least 28 days before departure.

  2. Students proposing to travel for any other reason related to study or research - for example to attend a conference or to undertake fieldwork or practical placement - must apply through the relevant Head of School. Each student must submit a completed Student Travel Form to the Head of School, along with a student Risk Management Form, and supporting documentation if required, at least 28 days before departure.

The forms are also available from Reception, Level 3, Education 2 Building.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, travel to some cities and countries is currently risky or dangerous. The situation can change quickly. As the University is concerned about the safety and well being of staff and students, students must check regularly on security and safety issues by accessing the following Travel Warnings and Travel Advisory web sites:

arrow UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office
