Background:
Margaret Robertson is Professor in Education and Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Education at La Trobe University. Margaret is involved with numerous international research projects focused on sustainable development, geographical education and teaching and learning with digital technologies. Her leadership in these areas is currently recognised with project directorship of the International ICSU funded (International Council for Science) project titled Geographical Perspectives on Sustainable Development Networking Local Area Partnerships with Teachers and Young Scientists.
As team leader and Chief Investigator of E-Learning Research projects Margaret has been successful with externally funded research grants related to Information and Communication Technologies and pedagogy, including consecutive ARC Linkage projects involving the Victorian Department of Education and Training and the Tasmanian Department of Education. These projects draw on concepts of real and imagined space and related issues of power, governance and agency.
Margaret has conducted research studies with colleagues in several overseas universities, most notably at the University of Cambridge where she was employed as a Senior Researcher on a national project in 1998 and maintains links with UK based researchers. Other universities where she has close associations for post-graduate teaching and research include the Universities of Helsinki, NIE in Singapore and Songkla University in Thailand (in cooperation with Australian Education International, Australian Embassy, Bangkok).
Numerous international teaching appointments complement Margaret's successful supervision and examination of Masters, and Doctoral candidates. Extensive experience as Program Director of post-graduate coursework programs and a strong commitment to quality and innovation in teaching are all part of Margaret's teaching and learning profile. Current innovations include the introduction of teaching and learning with global positioning systems and their associated geographical information systems and online connectivity - arguably at the frontier of mainstream information access in the broader community.
As International Executive Secretary, Geographic Education Commission of the International Geographical Union Margaret maintains communications with colleagues throughout the world. She is a member of the Australian Academy of Science National Committee for Geography and currently serves on the editorial boards of several journals including International Research in Geographical and Environmental Education, Research in Geographic Education and Fennia.
Her list of published research in international publications includes 8 books, 29 articles in international refereed journals, 29 invited book chapters, and 52 refereed papers in published conference proceedings. Her most recent book titles include:
