Applied Linguistics at La Trobe University

The Applied Linguistics programs at the School of Educational Studies of La Trobe University cover a wide range of content and academic levels including pre-service teacher training in TESOL, a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics, a Doctor of Education (EdD) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The programs are offered in Australia on the Bundoora campus in Melbourne as well as overseas in co-operation with several major universities in the People's Republic of China and Vietnam are several countries to teach our programs.

We currently have approximately 100 students enrolled in our programs in Australia, studying from the Graduate Certificate / Diploma in ALBE, the Graduate Certificate / Diploma in LOTE teaching, the Graduate Certificate / Diploma in TESOL through the Master of Applied Linguistics to the Doctor of Philosophy and the Doctor of Education . Our offshore programs in Vietnam and China have about the same number of students in the Applied Linguistics and Doctor of Education programs.

The School of Educational Studies is fortunate to have staff with academic qualifications and professional practical teaching experience in various international universities all around the world. Their research interests and expertise cover a wide spectrum of applied linguistics areas, such as, adult and child second language acquisition in second and foreign language environments, language policy and planning, computer use in language education, bilingualism, curriculum development, sociolinguistics, syntax, phonology, teaching methodology, cross-cultural communication and literacy education.

The School of Educational staff staff in the field of applied linguistics are:

Students who have graduated from the La Trobe programs occupy senior teaching, research and administrative positions in Australian universities, such as, Deakin University, Swinburne University, and the University of Melbourne; in primary and secondary schools; in adult migrant education programs; and in many overseas universities and language centres in China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. This combination of local Australian and international students enables us to provide a rich environment for the exchange of ideas in which we can all learn from one another.

From the Year 2000, the Adult Migrant Education Program Research Centre will be located on the Bundoora Campus. It will be co-hosted with the National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research from Macquarie University. Its purpose is to conduct research into applied linguistic issues of relevance to learners, teachers and service providers of English as a second language for adult learners in Australia.
