Research Supervision

Research Supervision – procedures for appointment of supervisors.

Research supervision is taken very seriously within the Faculty of Education. Our research students are part of our future alumni and make an important contribution to building our research strengths. We have an enviable reputation for completion progress and seek to offer mentoring support for academic staff and students throughout the process. Experienced supervisors within the Faculty are available for advice and support at all stages during the candidature period. Regular seminars and research conferences complement the research candidature process.

How does the process of appointing research supervisors take place?

    Step 1:

Applicants for admission to the degrees of Master of Education by Research, Education (Professional Doctorate) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) need to complete the relevant application forms.

    Step 2:

Once applications have been received staff eligible to supervise will be circulated for interest in offering to be either Principal or Co-Supervisor. Please note that the Faculty of Education policy is that the Principal Supervisor is a registered supervisor who has successfully supervised one research candidate to completion.

    Step 3:

Once all processes of the application are completed the application is signed by the Faculty’s Research Director and forwarded to the La Trobe University’s Research and Graduate Studies Office for processing the offer.

    Step 4:

Applicants will be made an offer of placement provided their application meets all the prerequisite entry standards including adequate supervision arrangements. Until the student accepts the offer the supervisors will be notified. The commencement of candidature is normally based on negotiation and this can change with both student and supervisor commitments.

    Step 5:

Once the candidate has formally commenced their candidature the time period commences and both student and supervisor will need to communicate regularly. Penalties occur once the candidature period has transpired.

    Supervising International Students
Supervising international students is a most rewarding experience. Our capacity as a Faculty to assist students in their endeavours from diverse cultural settings is well known in the research community. Our capacity to develop and grow in this important area is dependent on out willingness to branch out into new areas and expand our expertise with supervising students from cultures other than our own. In addition to sa wide range of support services provided by the University’s International Support Services the Faculty of Education offers support for staff who agree to supervise international students.
