'Who Cares about Human Rights and Genocide? A Major Educational Issue'
presented by Dr Sam Totten, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, USA.
Dr. Samuel Totten is a genocide scholar based at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. He is the co-editor of Genocide Studies and Prevention: an International Journal. He has published widely in the field, with articles appearing in the Journal of Genocide Research, Journal of Human Rights, Genocide Studies and Prevention, and Society. His books include Century of Genocide: Critical Essays and Eyewitness Testimony (New York: Routledge, 2004) and Genocide in Darfur: Investigating the Atrocities in the Sudan (New York: Routledge, forthcoming).
Dr Totten was employed as an English, Social Studies, Drama and Physical Education teacher as Eaglehawk Secondary College, and as an English and Physical Education teacher at East Loddon P-12 from 1976 to 1978.
In July/August 2004, Dr. Totten served as one of the 12 investigators with the U.S. State Department's Darfur Atrocities Documentation Team, which interviewed refugees from Darfur, Sudan, for the express purpose of collecting data in order to ascertain whether genocide had been perpetrated in Darfur. On September 9, 2004, using the data collected by the ADT, U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, declared that Government of Sudan troops and the Janjaweed (Arab militia) had perpetrated genocide in Darfur and was possibly still doing so.
In his lecture Dr Totten focused on the social constructivist role that education can play in issues such as genocide.
