Brief Profile
Dr Tricia McCann is a Lecturer in Education on the Melbourne campus of La Trobe University, Victoria, Australia. Her main teaching and passion focuses on student wellbeing, welfare and how we make meaning of our experience particularly through the lens of the person-centred approach. Tricia coordinates and teaches three subjects within the Master coursework program: "Communication and Interpersonal Skills', 'At Risk Students: critical considerations' and Person-Centred Approach for Teaching and Nursing'. She also coordinates the 'Student Welfare Method' in the Graduate Diploma in Education (secondary) and 'Understanding Self and Others' in the Bachelor of Teaching in Community and Outreach Education.
As an early career researcher she is continuing research developed from her Ph D study entitled,' A Theatre of the Observed: a study of adolescent meaning making'. This study plotted the journey of student within a school based Advocacy Program. For this thesis Tricia was awarded the 2009 Stewart Frazer Exemplary Thesis Award.
She is a Chief Investigator on the ARC Linkage Grant ' Engaging Adolescents in schooling: a longitudinal study of student use of electronic self-assessment tools within advocacy models of support.' This grant is an extension of the thesis research and incorporates web-based questionnaires that encourage students to reflect upon their own strengths in learning. It is also supported by teacher advocacy with a student-centred perspective on learning and well-being.
She has researched and written in the areas of drama in education and adolescent consciousness. Her particular interests are processes of meaning-making, studies of consciousness, and philosophies and psychological theories of learning.
