Prior to her appointment at La Trobe, A/Professor Milton held academic positions at the University of Western Sydney, Edith Cowan University and the University of Western Australia. She has been involved in a number of major national, interstate and local research projects and published widely in the areas of child and adult literacy, literacy difficulites and teacher education. She consults in the areas of teaching literacy in primary schools and literacy difficulties. The most recent government funded research project completed was a joint university project that investigated Indigenous tertiary students' uptake and use of ICT. She was also the coordinator of a funded project investigating standards and moderation across 6 Universities. She was part of a team that gained an ALTC grant to investigate models of assessment and support of pre-service teachers whilst on teaching practice. Earlier projects investigated literacy and numeracy provisions for students who experience difficulty in those areas, and teacher education related to literacy and numeracy teaching. She was also on the Academic Advisory Panel for ACER's 'Working out What Works' Project that investigated teacher development models to improve student outcomes in literacy and numeracy.
