Brief Profile
Buly joined the Department of Economics and Finance in July 2001. He previously held a post-doctoral position at the Department of Economics, Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Prior to that, he was lecturer in the School of Economics, Deakin University. His PhD was completed in 1999 at the University of Melbourne.
Buly's research interests cover the economics of education, ranging from theoretical modelling of education finance and its implications for growth and inequality to the empirical work on credit constraints, rural-urban education differences and intergenerational mobility. An important recent theme of his research has been the transition to higher education and factors influencing this transition. In addition to his work on the economics of education, Buly is undertaking research into household portfolio allocation decisions and the factors influencing these allocations.
Buly has published research in a range of Australian and international journals. In 2006, Buly was part of a successful research collaboration with Professor Bruce Chapman of the Australian National University and Professor Vance Martin of the University of Melbourne in to be awarded ARC Discovery Project funding over 3 years (2006-2008) for a project entitled “Why poorer students are less likely to go to university: Theoretical and empirical evidence for Australia with implications for policy”. This project is ongoing and is the main focus of Buly’s current research.
