Ecology and Resource Management
ResearchThe sustainable use of ecosystems is increasingly being recognised globally as the issue of this century. The science of Ecology and Resource Management is fundamental to finding practical solutions to these global challenges and is a key component of one of La Trobe University's recognised areas of research strength. Over 25 scientists working in the Departments of Botany, Genetics, Zoology, Agriculture, and Environmental Management and Ecology address a range of pressing conservation and wildlife issues in terrestrial and freshwater environments. These include climate change, wildlife management, weed invasion, conserving threatened species, managing our streams and wetlands, soil and water degradation, and managing fire for wildlife. Through collaborative research with a wide range of state and federal land managers in four states (e.g. Parks Services, Departments of Conservation and Primary Industry, Catchment Management Authorities) researchers in the group have a hands-on involvement in addressing important national ecological issues. This research is supported by substantial funding from sources including the Australian Research Council, Land and Water Australia, National Heritage Trust, Parks Services, and Catchment Management Authorities. Group members serve on national and international committees like the IUCN, influencing conservation policy in Australia and throughout the world. Content Approved by: Associate Professor
