eFramework Meets Dutch Higher Education

In 2004, 5 independent Dutch Research Universities supported by the SURF foundation embarked on a journey to select a single Student Information System and Technology stack that could be consistently implemented around a shared template and supported using a single expert configuration centre. To ensure consistency of approach, and to raise the visibility of shared processes and services, the project employed Archimate as architectural language to describe a common Enterprise Architecture. At a layer below the EA model, the SURF foundation is exploring the use of the eFramework to document common service usage models across the 5 Universities, and to support the continual evolution towards a SOA based approach to Student Information System solutions. Due to complete in 2010, this presentation based on an original presentation by Hans Janssen, relays the SURF foundations experience to date in this project.

The Netherlands' SURF foundation is a partner organization if the eFramework initiative, along with New Zealand’s Ministry of Education, JISC (UK), and Australia’s Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

Speaker: Simon Porter

Simon Porter worked on the University of Melbourne's ERP implementation for six years, and has been involved in the selection process for a new student system, and the implementation of university finance, human resources and research management systems. Throughout this time, Simon has developed a keen interest in information management, and in particular the ways in which the same source of information can be used for multiple purposes. In 2006 Simon developed and implemented the University's Find an Expert system, using core information form the University's ERP to produce the a public 'CV' for every researcher in the University. In 2007, Simon joined the University of Melbourne eScholarship Research Centre to assist with the development of the University's eResearch capabilities. A significant component of Simon's time is seconded to Link Affiliates to assist with the development of the e-Framework to facilitate technical interoperability within and across education and research.
