Computing information for new staff to the Bendigo Campus

Following is a step-by-step guide to getting set up on the computer systems at the Bendigo campus. Some of these steps are handled by the Information Technology Services Department and some by the Desktop Systems Support Group.

If you get stuck at any point, please contact the DSSG Service Desk either by email or by dialling x7722.

  • Make sure you have a staff id number
If you don't know your staff number, you should contact your departmental manager or Personnel.
  • Your computer accounts
As a La Trobe staff member, you will be granted a computer account that will enable you to access a number of IT facilities. This is called an Active Directory (AD) account.
Your Active Directory account is your main La Trobe login. It is used for systems such as email, ESS, WebCT, etc.
    For security reasons, passwords expire every 90 days, with the previous 12 passwords not available for re-use. Passwords must be a minimum of 8 characters and contain at least 3 of the 4 types of characters (Capital - A, B, C, Lower - a, b, c, Number - 1, 2, 3, Non alpha/numeric !, @, #, $).
Please visit our web page for information on how to change your password.
La Trobe University has provided an online utility for both staff and students to change their own Active Directory passwords. DSSG highly recommend that you Register to Reset your Password and use the Password Reset if you forget your Active Directory Password.
  • Setting up your own computer on campus
Talk with your department manager about your requirements on the computer to be used on campus. They can then contact DSSG and organise for the computer to be set up for your use.
  • IT Support whilst on campus
Once your computer is configured, you can log any queries/problems with DSSG either by email or by dialling x7722.
  • Dial-in Service
La Trobe dial-in service, which provides remote access to the Internet from home or other locations, are available to all staff. You login using your Active Directory account. For information on configuring your computer, please visit: http://www.latrobe.edu.au/itscatalogue/services/list/Modems/overview
  • Standard Operating Environment (SOE)
The Standard Operating Environment for windows computers is a hardware and software specification suitable for La Trobe University. It was developed by experts from all Faculties of the University and agreed to by all Faculties and Administration. It is now a policy of the University that all personal computer purchases adhere to the SOE. It does not cover Apple computers, although the application set is intended to be consistent. To purchase a Macintosh, please contact the Macintosh Administrator either by email or by phone at x7722. For further information on the SOE, please visit: http://www.latrobe.edu.au/soe
