Thinking of Moving a Computer?

Here are a few simple questions to help work out what may need to be done:

Is the person who will be using the computer new to the university?

  • If so, it is recommended that a person that is familiar with the requirements needed, contact DSSG.
  • they need to have had a person who is familiar with their requirements contact DSSG. Once the form is handed to DSSG/ITS it may take up to 48 hours to be activated on all servers within La Trobe.

Does the room to which the computer is to be moved have enough network points?

  • If not, contact the Network Administrator on x7247 to have new points installed.
(This can take a week or more to have a contractor install and certify the new points.)

Will your network cable extend from the computer to the wall socket?

  • DSSG have cables up to 5 metres in length for purchase.
  • Have you tried to rearrange the layout of the office to use a shorter cable?
  • Contact the Network Administrator on x7247 and have new network sockets installed.

Do you have enough power points in the new room?

  • At DSSG and ITS we do not sell or stock power boards. Purchase your own from the stationery supplier.
  • Get Buildings and Grounds to install new outlets.
(Remember do not run a computer and a heater or jug together in a power board or extension cable!)

Are you able to unplug, move and reconnect the computer yourself?

  • If you need help to disconnect or re-connect the cables, please give DSSG at least 3 days notice.
  • Neither ITS or DSSG are general movers. Contact Buildings and Grounds if you need help moving equipment.

Will the person or people previously using the computer be moving with it?

  • If not, have you or the user(s) backed up all data that may be needed?

The ITS network administrator needs to be told about ANY network device such as a printer or computer that gets moved.

  • This enables ITS to update the IP database (unique network numbers) so the computer can find the printers and servers on the network.
Some equipment may work on the same floor or elsewhere in the same building, but often a new IP number will need to be issued.
(This can take up to 24 hours to propagate throughout the network, after a request for a new IP number has been processed by ITS.)
