Connecting to Hopper with Windows
There are 2 alternative means of transferring files between your PC and Hopper. Below are instructions for the two methods.
How to Map a Network Drive
The following instructions will only work from on campus. You can't do this from home!
To connect to your hopper account, you need to map a network drive. Here's how to do it, with the example of the account name ADUsername
- Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop
- From the menu which appears left click on the Map Network Drive option

- Where it says Drive: select a letter to call the drive (e.g. Z:) from the drop-down menu.
- On the next line, where it says Folder: or Path: (depending on the version on your PC) enter the relevant path for the account your are mapping, for example, if your AD user name for hopper is "ADUsername" enter: \\hopper.bendigo.latrobe.edu.au\adusername
Do not enter "smith1" - make sure you use your Active Directory Username

- Click on Finish.
Your file space on hopper is now available in the same way as your desktop drive is: you can double click on "My Computer" and then double click on whichever drive number you chose to map hopper to - in the example given, "Z:"
Please don't create new files or edit new files on hopper - create them or edit them on your computer, and then transfer them to hopper by dragging to hopper (using the connection you created above)
That's it! Now, when you double click on my computer you will see another drive listed there, this will be your hopper account. Now you can drag files to and from it to copy them. To make it easier next time, right-click on the hopper drive icon, and select create shortcut. If you place the shortcut on the desktop, you can just double-click the shortcut next time you log in to connect to hopper.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
There are various programs available that make it easy to use FTP. Once upon a time, we all used command line tools to do ftp. You don't have to any more though. FTP has been around for years. It pre-dates the world wide web, back to when the only people who could use the internet were those who knew how it worked. FTP is good because it doesn't matter what brand of computer you use, if you have an FTP client then you can get and put files from computer to computer.
Don't try to use IE (your microsoft web browser) to do FTP login to hopper. Most microsoft IE releases won't log you in properly. Even if you do get logged in IE won't always show you the public link in your directory.
We have provided instructions below on configuring Filezilla. There are hundreds of FTP programs available, this is just one of them.
- Download Filezilla
- Follow the setup instructions to install it on your computer
- Open Filezilla
- In the Address bar, type in the following:
Address: hopper.bendigo.latrobe.edu.au
User: your Active Directory Username
Password: your password
and then click Quickconnect
- The window on the left hand side (Local Site) is your computer and the window on the right (Remote Site) is Hopper. To transfer the files, just select the file and then drag and drop it to the folder you desire.
